I just wanted to share some of my thoughts about the recent news. No, I am not sharing my views on recent politics. Yesterday I saw on the news that there were Zika virus cases in Miami from local mosquitoes. As you can imagine, local mosquitoes carrying the Zika virus it is a game changer but not unexpected. If a Floridian visiting a country where the Zika virus is prevalent gets infected with Zika and comes back home and is bit by a local mosquito then that mosquito can pass the Zika virus on to another Floridian. It is not difficult to imagine that we will be seeing more Florida Zika virus cases from local mosquitoes. I’m sure many of you saw that the CDC were covering a small area in Miami. Thankfully, most mosquitoes in our area are territorial and only travel 1-3 miles. The good news is that in the US we have always been able to control mosquito outbreaks. Our government is usually very aggressive in pursuing ways to control mosquito outbreaks and we personally have ways to control the mosquito population in our own environments.
First, be diligent. It is the rainy season so we have lots of standing water especially in shady areas where mosquitoes love to hang out. Dump bases of flower pots, tarps, lids, whatever can hold water. Use mosquito dunks in ponds, fountains and rain barrels that do not have moving water. If you have standing water that you cannot control any other way, move it around with a stick. Clean out your gutters!! It takes 1-3 days for mosquito eggs to hatch and become larvae. Depending on the temperature, it could take 4-10 days for the larvae to become biting mosquitoes. This is the reason you must be diligent and check for standing water every day. Keep your doors closed when you are indoors, and use a bug repellent when you are outside.
Some of you might be considering an Automatic Mosquito Misting System like our MISTIGATOR. If your yard is not protected by a screen, a misting system will greatly lower the mosquito population in your yard. Many of our customers could not even go into their yards without having our MISTIGATOR system. That being said, you still need to be diligent about standing water but an automatic MISTIGATOR system will give you the control you need to enjoy your yard again. Our neighbors and their safety are important to us. If you have a question or just need some advice, contact me at 813-935-8982 or visit our website at buzzofftampabay.com. Remember…It’s your yard.
