Zeka Virus Update and How to Protect your Family

With the CDC announcing this week that the Zeka Virus is ‘Scarier than we initially thought’ , new concerns about how to protect your family are out there. Mosquito-borne illnesses are not new. Even though this is a nationwide concern, our focus at BuzzOFF Mosquito of Tampa Bay is mainly Florida. Mosquito-borne diseases found in Florida include West Nile virus disease, Eastern equine encephalitis, and St. Louis encephalitis. In the past few years, we have also had mosquito-borne diseases found in other countries brought into Florida when infected people or animals come into our state and are bitten by mosquitoes while visiting. Some examples of these diseases include chikungunya fever, dengue fever, malaria, yellow fever, and Rift Valley fever and of course, the zeka virus. Because of our tropical environment, Florida is a breeding ground for mosquitoes, including the species that are spreading these diseases.
