The Mosquito Problem

Mosquitoes and other biting insects keep you and your family from enjoying the outdoors. Since the introduction of West Nile Encephalitis, the once simply annoying mosquito has become a serious health threat. Until now, messy sprays, smelly candles or propane devices that actually attract mosquitoes were your only line of defense – and you usually end up having to go inside anyway.

EASTERN EQUINE ENCEPHALITIS AND WEST NILE VIRUS

What is West Nile Virus?

The West Nile virus is spread by infected mosquitoes. About 20 – 50% of patients may have a rash, muscle weakness with other related symptoms. Many people are bitten by mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus but few people develop severe disease or even notice any symptoms at all. For patients with severe cases of West Nile virus infection, the outlook is more uncertain. West Nile encephalitis or meningitis may lead to brain damage and death. Approximately 10% of patients with brain inflammation do not survive.

What is Eastern Equine Encephalitis?

EEE is spread by mosquitoes. The disease spreads to the brain and symptoms begin from a few days to more than a week after being bitten by an infected mosquito. The symptoms include a sudden onset of headache, high fever, chills and vomiting. The disease can progress to disorientation, seizures and coma. It is fatal in approximately 30 percent of the cases. In less severe cases a skin rash, swollen lymph glands, body aches and tiredness can occur.

BuzzOFF Mosquito of Tampa Bay has automatic misting systems that control the mosquitoes that cause Eastern Equine Encephalitis and West Nile Virus. We offer a Free Yard Evaluation and Estimate.

Our system automatically mists an EPA-registered Pyrethrum solution around the perimeter of your home or any chosen area at predetermined intervals. The solution, Pyrethrum, is a biodegradable, water-based concentrate derived from Chrysanthemum flowers that when used as directed, effectively controls mosquitoes and other biting insects.

What can be done for prevention?

  • Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus on exposed skin.
  • Wear long sleeves and pants.
  • Have secure screens on windows and doors.
  • Eliminate mosquito breeding sites by emptying standing water from flower pots, buckets, barrels and other containers.

MORE ON MOSQUITOES

Mosquito: There are over 2500 different species of mosquitoes throughout the world with about 200 species occurring in the United States. Mosquitoes cause more human suffering than any other organism, with over one million people dying from mosquito-borne diseases every year. Only female mosquitoes attack and during a single bite, the average mosquito drinks roughly 5-millionths of a liter of blood. A mosquito can smell her human prey from 60 to 140 feet away. Mosquitoes not only carry diseases that afflict humans, but they also transmit several diseases to dogs and horses. Mosquitoes are capable of transmitting diseases such as malaria, yellow fever, dengue, filariasis, St. Louis encephalitis, Western Equine encephalitis, LaCrosse encephalitis, Japanese encephalitis and Eastern Equine encephalitis.
